Starting in mid-2027, Norwegian timber exporter Viken AT Market will move part of its timber transport operations to a brand-new hybrid vessel that will run on electricity and ammonia fuel. Vessel developer Skarv Shipping has multiple ammonia-fueled vessels on order from Chinese shipyard Huanghai Shipbuilding.
ACME has selected two Chinese technology providers for the first phase of its renewable ammonia project in Oman, which will produce renewable ammonia from 2027.
Starting in 2027, Hygenco will produce ammonia compliant with the EU’s RFNBO standard. Pre-certification from CertifHy enables access to key European markets, and marks another project milestone achieved in recent months.
ACWA and Italian gas pipeline operator Snam have agreed to explore collaboration and joint investments to establish a supply chain to Europe, including the development of an ammonia import terminal in southern Italy.
Partners report that the voyage demonstrates “efficient and economic” future pathways for the transport of ammonia, particularly as the scale-up of new maritime fuels occurs. The Green Power vessel was also involved in Trafigura’s first-ever ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia in the Straits of Gibraltar last July.
The trio has developed a high-pressure, small-scale, direct liquid injection engine utilising pure ammonia fuel with no additives or pilot fuel. Last June the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials unveiled a MW-scale, LNG-ammonia co-fired engine for maritime applications, utilising the same combustion approach.
Via a new round of funding from the US Department of Energy, several ammonia production projects will advance. GTI Energy will lead a $1.5 million pre-FEED study to apply advanced CCS to steam methane reforming at the Mosaic Faustina facility in Louisiana. Also granted funds, Ammobia will continue to progress its new, improved version of the Haber Bosch process.
In Japan, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment will invest $212 million in the domestic manufacture of ammonia engines, fuel tanks and components. In Korea, the national Export-Import Bank has committed to supporting ammonia-fueled newbuilds.
TFI and Ammonia Europe have both launched voluntary certification schemes, aiming to help ammonia producers verify the emissions footprint of their products and attract customers. Both schemes have informed the development of the AEA’s umbrella certification scheme, which is now progressing to the pilot stage.
Madoqua and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines will lead development of the corridor. Industry partners in the consortium include financiers, terminal operators, Port authorities, alternative fuel producers and offtakers. The transportation of liquified CO2 along the corridor will help establish a supply chain for sequestration of carbon emissions in Norway at Horisont Energi’s Gismarvik CO2 hub.
