In my last message as AEA President, I wish to convey my sincere gratitude to the membership and AEA staff. I am excited to see the industry moving into its next phase, and will be proud to support incoming President Vibeke Rasmussen as the AEA strides forward in its current and future initiatives: certification, advocacy, safety and public perception.

Enova funding for maritime ammonia: Amon Gas and Höegh Autoliners
New funding from the Norwegian government will assist two maritime ammonia developers: Amon Gas and Höegh Autoliners. Amon has confirmed orders for two ammonia-powered, mid-sized gas carriers, while Höegh will establish an ammonia fuel supply chain to ensure its Aurora Class car carriers can run on ammonia fuel on delivery in 2027.
IGNIS launches renewable production project in Spain
IGNIS has signed a development MoU with local authorities for an 800,000 tons per year renewable ammonia project, to be completed in 2031. A €400 million partnership with investment firm KKR will assist project finance.
Sweden-Belgium shipping corridor to be serviced by ammonia-fueled ro-ro vessels
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the Port of Gothenburg, North Sea Port, and ferry transport provider DFDS aim to be operating two ammonia-fueled Roll-on/roll-off ferries on various routes between Sweden and Belgium by 2030.
Yara: electrolysis plant opened in Herøya, Norway
Yara’s newly commissioned plant at Herøya Industrial Park will produce 10 tons per day of renewable hydrogen, enabling the production of 20,000 tons of renewable ammonia per year.
Orica and Fertiberia demonstrate low-carbon blasting agent in Spain
Orica and Fertiberia have conducted a test blast of their low-carbon Technical Ammonium Nitrate product in Spain. To manufacture the TAN blasting agent, Orica used low-carbon ammonium nitrate produced by Fertiberia in Puertollano, Spain.
Marine engines ordered, construction contracts signed
WinGD’s X‑DF‑A dual-fuel engines have been ordered by Singapore-based shipping giant AET for deployment onboard new Aframax tankers, being built in China. Fishing vessels operators Vardin and Framherji have ordered Wärtsilä 25 engines for a series of three fishing trawlers that will operate in the Faroe Islands. In construction news, CMB.TECH will build the Yara Eyde vessel for Yara and North Sea Container Line in China, with vessel delivery scheduled for mid-2026.
Lloyd’s Register: vessel AiP and development updates
Several ammonia-centric vessel designs were granted AiP at the recent Posidonia shipping exhibition in Greece. Lloyd’s Register approved designs including the world’s largest Very Large Ammonia Carrier, a container vessel and a gas carrier propelled by Amogy’s ammonia-to-power technology, a NOX-compliant container vessel featuring a MAN ammonia engine, and an ammonia-powered Very Large Ore Carrier. Lloyd’s Register also recently approved H2SITE’s onboard ammonia cracking technology.
