Maritime momentum builds: ammonia-powered container ships, offshore service vessels

Seaspan and partners will look towards commercialisation for their large-scale, ammonia-powered container vessel design. Korea Maritime Consultants has been granted AiP for a small-sized container vessel concept for small-scale applications, and the Blaavinge consortium aims to develop their ammonia-powered offshore wind service vessel in time for use in the Utsira Nord project in Norway.

The pre-FEED phase for Hyrasia One will conclude at the end of this year. The project expects to build a 2 million tonne per year renewable hydrogen (or 11 million tonnes per year ammonia) facility by 2032 both for local use and for the export market.

Hy2gen to produce renewable ammonia in Finland, enters into partnership with Plug Power

Hy2gen and Plug Power’s renewable ammonia project will be part of a total 2.2 GW deployment across Finland, aiming to strategically utilise the country’s fast decarbonising grid and policy support at both national and EU level. Also in Finland, Flexens’ 300 MW hydrogen and ammonia project is expected to become operational in 2027, increasing the fraction of Europe’s ammonia and hydrogen needs produced locally.

The Ammogen consortium has begun construction on a commercial scale ammonia cracker in the Tyseley Energy Park, aiming to produce 200kg of hydrogen per day for the mobility market. The demonstrator is the latest in a series of announced cracking projects in the UK, demonstrating improved technology, public and private partnerships, plus the utilisation of existing port facilities and resource hubs.
